The Municipality of Kos, as a Bike Friendly Destination, celebrated world bicycle day on Monday, June 3, 2024, at Eleftherias Square with a special event and celebration. The central message of the event was "The bicycle leads us towards a more sustainable future."
The event aimed to highlight the importance of bicycles and non-motorized transportation, not only for the physical health and fitness of citizens but also for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and combating Climate Change. After all, World Bicycle Day was established by the United Nations, reflecting the need to promote sustainable transportation and the beneficial effects of cycling on public health, the environment, sustainability, and the enhancement of quality of life.
As part of the Municipality of Kos’s event honoring World Bicycle Day, and in collaboration with local authorities, professional bodies, and cycling clubs of the city, a beautiful bike ride was organized through the historic center of Kos. This ride included both young and old cycling enthusiasts, following a leisurely route through the city of Kos.
This symbolic bike ride aimed to encourage citizens to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle and to further showcase the potential of cycling tourism on Kos—a cyclist-friendly island worth exploring, offering unparalleled natural beauty and a rich travel experience to visitors.
The event was attended by the Mayor of Kos, Mr. Theodosis Nikitaras, the Deputy Mayor of Tourism, Mrs. Matina Voukelatou Christodoulidi, and the Municipal Sports Consultant, Mrs. Dionysia Giannouli, along with representatives and athletes from the cycling divisions of Kos’s Sports Clubs, the Hellenic Red Cross of Kos, professionals from the cycling industry, and others.
Participation certificates were given to the young cycling enthusiasts, and a raffle was held for children’s helmets, donated by local cycling companies and shops. Awards were also presented to the cycling clubs and bicycle shop owners who support the municipality’s cycling initiatives.
It is worth noting that the Municipality of Kos has been awarded the “Bike Friendly Destination” label by AMKE NatTour for the services it provides to cycling tourists and is a member of the Bike Friendly Network in Greece.
