The Municipality of Alexandroupolis is becoming a pioneer in the development of sustainable mobility and sustainable tourism in Greece by certifying its infrastructure and services for bicycle use with the Bike Friendly Destination label.
On the afternoon of Thursday, June 3, the Municipality of Alexandroupolis celebrated World Bicycle Day with the awarding of the Bike Friendly Destination label.
At the Alexandroupolis beach, with the participation of the Alexandroupolis Bike Team Cycling Sports Club and a large number of cyclists, both young and old, Mayor Giannis Zamboukis received the Municipality’s Bike Friendly Destination certification from Ms. Vicky Karantzavelou, General Director of NATTOUR, the non-profit organization managing the Bike Friendly label in collaboration with the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, and under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Environment & Energy.
In response to new trends in tourism and the growing demand from visitors for closer contact with nature and access to authentic experiences, the Municipality of Alexandroupolis is enhancing its tourism profile by joining Greece’s network of Bike Friendly destinations.
The benefits for the municipality will be numerous, as this initiative enriches its tourism offering by incorporating cycling activities, targeting a new category of visitors focused on nature, and thereby extending the tourist season. At the same time, it highlights the network of bike paths, various cycling routes in nature, and the cycling infrastructure and services available in the region.
