As part of its efforts to promote cycling tourism and bicycles as a sustainable means of transportation for tourists, the “Bike Friendly” label hosted an event for its members and partners to foster relationships and exchange ideas. The event, held online due to pandemic restrictions, took place on Tuesday, March 9, 2021.

Participants and members of the “Bike Friendly” network had the opportunity to meet each other, share their perspectives and experiences, and explore potential collaborations.

Representatives from cycling companies presented their programs aimed at supporting cyclists in the areas they operate, showcasing cycling routes and, in some cases, innovative ways to tour via bike using electronic applications for guiding visitors.

Hotel representatives shared their experiences in catering to visitors who enjoy alternative activities and organized cycling groups. They also discussed the cycling opportunities available in their respective regions and highlighted the natural beauty of those areas.

Municipality representatives talked about their experiences and methods for developing cycling infrastructure to serve both visiting cyclists and local residents, with a focus on sustainable urban mobility.

The “Bike Friendly” label also presented its marketing initiatives aimed at promoting bicycle use across Greece. Additionally, it outlined the actions and innovations it has implemented so far to support cycling tourism and boost visibility for its network members.

During the event’s open dialogue, participants explored opportunities for joint actions and initiatives to share experiences within the network (hotels, cycling companies) and discussed the possibility of creating shared cycling events, such as races or gatherings, in certified municipalities. Several cycling companies also offered advisory and practical support to other network members (municipalities, hotels, travel agencies) to further promote cycling culture in Greece’s bike-friendly destinations. The goal is to develop cycling activities at certified businesses and showcase the spirit of collaboration and mutual support within the Bike Friendly community.

The event also addressed open concerns regarding the design and marking of cycling routes, the protection of natural landscapes in cycling areas, and the need for further actions to protect nature and trails.
