Hippocrates, the great man of Kos (460-370bc). The “father of western medicine” and his counselings -up-to-date and contemorary in our days

Hippocrates was a philosopher, scientist, writer and a doctor – one the greatest among the bright minds of the Ancient Greek world.

In his healing methods he would always start by close observation of the manifestations of the disease. For the first time ever, Hippocrates was the one to explore the human anatomy and psyche as well. His philosophy was mainly based on prognosis than diagnosis, so he introduced the principles of the Science of treatment of the Body and Mind of Man.

He is recognized to be the “father of medicine” in the Western world. His scientific views as well as his principles on matters of medical morals and ethics were grouped together in 70 essays, known to be the “Hippocratic Corpus”. His most important work is the “Hippocratic Oath”, a complete code-of- ethics vow that even today doctors recite during their graduation in medical schools in Greece and around the world.

International hippocratic foundation of kοs

Located on the eastern side of Asclepieion, it was founded in 1960, aspiring to promote Hippocrates’ principals and ideals around the world. It features a gallery with important exhibits, a standard model of Hippocrates’ infirmary and pharmacy, a well-stocked library, a conference room and the Botanical Gardens with medicinal herbs of the Greek flora mentioned in Hippocrates’ works.

Asclepieion, the sanctuary of asclepius

The Asclepieion of Kos, the ruins of which have been preserved since the 4th century B.C., lies at 3,4 km northwest of Kos Town, amidst lush vegetation and with a wonderful view to the sea. It is the most important monument of the island and one of the most famous sanctuaries of this type, in antiquity. It was a religious sanctuary for the worship of the god Asclepius, a healing center and a medical school and Hippocrates taught at the school he himself founded within the temple area.

We share with you excerpts of hippocrates’ wisdom and philisophy, of great value in our lifes:

“The most important medicine of all, is to teach people how not to need one”

“Your food is your “medicine” and your “medicine” is your food”

“If we could give each person the right quantity of food and exercise, not too much but not too little, we would have found the safest path to health”

“Where there is love for man, then love for life soon follows”

Starting from Atlantis: Getting to know the town and the island

Kos town specifically and the whole island as well, are an open-air museum with iconic monuments, outdoors sites with free entrance, architectural diversity and an extended network of bike lanes. So, off we go with our bicycle, to visit “Neratzia”-the Medieval Knights Templar fortress, Hippocrates’ Plane, The Ancient Agora, the Museum, Casa Romana, Eleftherias Square with the traditional cafes, tavernas and the Municipal Market, the Hippocratic Foundation and Ascelpieion. You can use your bicycle to visit fine wineries such as Hatziemmanuel (2,4km), Akrani Estate (12km), the organic estate Pandrosia, producing aloe for natural beauty product and foods. Daily excursions of Island hopping are available from the Kos port to Kalymnos island and from Kardamena port to Nisyros island.

There are bike trails high in the mountain that offer a bird’s eye view of the island and a getaway to nature. Wonderful beaches and traditional villages can also be visited by bicycle, especially the north-eastern part of the island that is flat and ideal for carefree cycling.

The bicycle lanes start at the norther end of the island at Faros Beach and go all the way to Psalidi Beach on the east side of the island. There are also countless smaller roads starting from Kos town and expanding at a radius of 13km..
