The development of cycling sports and tourism in Western Greece is at the heart of the initiative by the Region, which signed a memorandum of cooperation with the non-profit organization NatTour for the “Bike Friendly” Certification Program.
The memorandum was signed by Regional Governor Nektarios Farmakis and NatTour representative Vicky Karantzavelou on Thursday, February 25, in the presence of Deputy Regional Governor for Entrepreneurship, Research, and Innovation Fokion Zaimis. The aim of the cooperation is to promote the initiative and encourage municipalities to obtain the “Bike Friendly” certification. There is also a possibility of organizing cycling events, whether for sports or recreation, within certified municipalities to boost their tourism activity. This is particularly crucial for the post-COVID-19 period, when physical distancing will still be necessary. Cycling offers a great advantage, as it allows participants to maintain distance while enjoying the activity.
As part of the collaboration, the Region of Western Greece will highlight cycling activities, certified municipalities, and businesses through its online hub and printed materials. Additionally, the Region will promote the “Bike Friendly” label and certified municipalities and businesses at tourism exhibitions once they resume. The memorandum will also help local businesses shift towards more sustainable forms of tourism, ensuring long-term development that is environmentally friendly.
Regional Governor Nektarios Farmakis stated: “Western Greece has excellent potential to promote cycling and develop tourist, recreational, historical, and sports cycling routes. From Ancient Olympia to the mountainous regions of Achaia and Nafpaktia, with their rare forests, unique lakes, rivers, and waterfalls, our region can become a model for ecological development, while simultaneously expanding into a booming tourism sector in Europe.”
Fokion Zaimis added: “The bicycle is the most environmentally friendly means of transportation. It is our duty to integrate it into our daily lives and offer new visitors, sports groups, cycling enthusiasts, and tourists the opportunity to explore our region through a sustainable form of mobility. I am pleased with this collaboration and believe that cycling can further enhance Western Greece as a destination. The Region will support efforts to create bike paths, knowing the demand from citizens of all ages.”
