“Green” free transportation by the Municipality of Alexandroupolis with electric bicycles
The pilot implementation of a new network of 45 shared electric bicycles has begun in Alexandroupolis, which aims to improve the daily lives of citizens and contribute to changing the way people move around the city.
This is a green initiative funded by the NSRF (National Strategic Reference Framework) that involves the procurement and installation of:
- Forty-five (45) electric bicycles, specially designed for public use,
- Seven (7) automated bike rental stations,
- Forty-eight (48) electronic bike locking and charging stations, and finally, the necessary software for system control and billing.
The bicycles have been placed at the following rental and automatic charging stations:
- 288 Democracy Avenue,
- Municipal parking lot, near the “Fotis Kosmas” stadium,
- Alexandroupolis KEP (Citizen Service Center), 106 Ethnikis Antistaseos Street,
- Municipal swimming pool,
- Herodotou and Th. Georgiadi (Zisis military camp),
- N. Chili (opposite the stadium),
- Maistro (central square),
These stations include locking/charging positions and allow the bicycles to charge while they are locked at the station.
The system allows for the automatic rental of electric bicycles without the presence of staff. Citizens can electronically book a bike rental after downloading the “Bike Alexandroupoli-Apps” application on their mobile phones. They can pick up and return the bikes only to and from the seven rental and automatic charging stations, which include locking/charging positions.
In this way, the Municipality of Alexandroupolis offers residents and visitors of the city free access to electric bicycles with the aim of reducing car traffic in the city, facilitating other means of public transportation, limiting traffic congestion, and reducing environmental pollution and noise.
At the same time, the bicycle will serve as an alternative means of transportation for tourists and a way for them to get to know the city and its local attractions.
It should be noted that Alexandroupolis has been awarded the “Bike Friendly Destination” label by NATTOUR AMKE for the services it provides to cycling tourists.
