Skiathos remains a bike-friendly destination for the second consecutive year
For the second consecutive year, the Municipality of Skiathos strengthens its strategy for promoting sustainable transportation for tourists and highlighting the island’s tourist attractions and natural beauty. The green landscape of Skiathos meets all the certified requirements of a cycling destination. The island’s network of cycling routes offers various paths suitable for all tastes and ages. The clear signage and favorable terrain make the island an ideal destination for both individual and organized cyclists, as well as for those interested in thematic tourism.
Skiathos meets several criteria with cyclist-friendly services and infrastructure. Some of these include:
- Presence of cycling routes within the municipal boundaries. The network of trails is expanding, with plans for new paths for hikers, cyclists, and people with disabilities.
- Availability of bike rental and repair services from businesses based within the municipality, including the provision of new electric bikes and a distribution network to hotels or accommodations on the island.
- Organization of cycling events within the municipality to promote cycling culture and the use of bicycles as an eco-friendly transportation option.
- Participation of the municipality in tourism exhibitions, workshops, and networking events related to cycling.
- Electric bike charging points in public areas (e.g., the port).
- Certified Bike Friendly Hotels and accommodations within the municipality.
Mayor of Skiathos, Mr. Theodoros Tzoumas, stated: “It is very important for us to be recognized as a bike-friendly destination for the second consecutive year. This was an achievement made possible through hard work to meet all the necessary specifications. It’s also important to encourage visitors to use bicycles to access the incredible spots on Skiathos that cannot be reached by car. We’ve also started collaborating with the Bike Friendly Network and Paths of Greece to combine cycling and hiking activities, which greatly supports alternative tourism and extends the tourist season. I would like to sincerely thank Ms. Karantzavelou for the cooperation, and we look forward to continuing this next year.”
Ms. Vicky Karantzavelou, General Director of NatTour AMKE, added: “I want to congratulate the Municipality of Skiathos, which was one of the first municipalities to believe in cycling and become bike-friendly. They were certified last year, and this year they are renewing the label, which essentially encourages tourists to explore the island using an eco-friendly form of transportation.”
The Bike Friendly network currently consists of 130 hotels (Bike Friendly Hotels), 8 municipalities-destinations (Bike Friendly Destinations), and several partners, such as cycling companies (Bike Friendly Partners) and travel agencies (Greek Bike Specialists), ensuring complete service for cycling enthusiasts. Participation in the network continues to grow, reflecting the need for both visitors and residents to use bicycles as a COVID-free mode of transportation, while also creating organized cycling services and infrastructure that build a cycling identity for destinations.
