Hippocrates, the great man of Kos (460-370bc). The “father of western medicine” and his counselings -up-to-date and contemorary in our days
Hippocrates was a philosopher, scientist, writer and a doctor – one the greatest among the bright minds of the Ancient Greek world.
In his healing methods he would always start by close observation of the manifestations of the disease. For the first time ever, Hippocrates was the one to explore the human anatomy and psyche as well. His philosophy was mainly based on prognosis than diagnosis, so he introduced the principles of the Science of treatment of the Body and Mind of Man.
He is recognized to be the “father of medicine” in the Western world. His scientific views as well as his principles on matters of medical morals and ethics were grouped together in 70 essays, known to be the “Hippocratic Corpus”. His most important work is the “Hippocratic Oath”, a complete code-of- ethics vow that even today doctors recite during their graduation in medical schools in Greece and around the world.
International hippocratic foundation of Kοs
Located on the eastern side of Asclepieion, it was founded in 1960, aspiring to promote Hippocrates’ principals and ideals around the world. It features a gallery with important exhibits, a standard model of Hippocrates’ infirmary and pharmacy, a well-stocked library, a conference room and the Botanical Gardens with medicinal herbs of the Greek flora mentioned in Hippocrates’ works.
Asclepieion, the sanctuary of asclepius
The Asclepieion of Kos, the ruins of which have been preserved since the 4th century B.C., lies at a distance of 3,4 km northwest of Kos Town, amidst lush vegetation and with a wonderful view of the sea. It is the most important monument of the island and one of the most famous sanctuaries of this type, in antiquity. It was a religious sanctuary for the worship of the god Asclepius, a healing center and a medical school and Hippocrates taught at the school he himself founded within the temple area.
